Tabarca residents refound association to block island autonomy
Residents of Tabarca island in Alicante have refounded the association Nueva Tabarca–La Protegida to oppose a proposal to grant the island minor local entity status. The proposal, originally launched in April by the Isla de Tabarca association, seeks to partially decouple the island from the Alicante City Council's administration.
Under the proposed status, the island would gain management over most local matters, though the Alicante City Council would retain control over urban planning and the local police force.
Opponents of the change argue that the movement is driven by individuals who are not permanent residents but are registered elsewhere for access to public services. While 33 of the island's 59 registered residents signed in favor of the new status, the refounded association claims to have secured approximately ninety signatures to reject the change, asserting that the island should not be subjected to a new status imposed by outsiders.
