Tabarca island, located off the coast of Alicante, Spain, has recently been highlighted for its environmental and historical significance. The island was recognized by National Geographic as one of Spain’s 25 most beautiful beaches for 2026, noted for its Mediterranean waters and Posidonia oceanica meadows. Opponents of the proposal argue that the movement for autonomy is being driven by non-permanent residents. While 33 of the 59 registered residents signed in favor of the change, the refounded association claims to have gathered approximately ninety signatures to reject the new status, asserting that the island should not have a status imposed by outsiders.
