Établissement français du sang extends mobilization amid low reserves

The Établissement français du sang (EFS) has extended its blood donation mobilization campaign until June 20 following a critical drop in national reserves. Stocks fell to 75,000 bags, below the safety threshold of 90,000, due to factors including public holidays, heatwaves, and early summer vacations. To maintain the transfusion chain, approximately 10,000 donations are required daily.

In addition to general blood shortages, the EFS is pursuing the ‘Ambition Plasma’ strategy to increase plasma collection. Currently, France relies heavily on imports, with approximately 70% of plasma-derived medicinal products coming from abroad, particularly the United States. The goal of the initiative is to reach 1,400,000 liters of plasma collection by 2028, aiming to achieve a 50-50 balance between domestic and imported products to ensure greater medical sovereignty.
