Taco Bell sales dip 2% as Cyclospora outbreak spreads across US
A multistate outbreak of Cyclospora, a parasite that causes severe diarrhoea, has been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico and grown in central Mexico. The CDC reports the outbreak has reached 45 U.S. states with more than 18,000 confirmed or suspected cases – 6,707 laboratory‑confirmed and over 11,500 still under investigation – and about 100 hospitalisations, but no deaths. Roughly 1,900‑1,950 people have fallen ill in nine states, with Michigan bearing the heaviest burden (over 10,000 confirmed cases).
The food‑safety crisis has hit fast‑food giant Taco Bell. The chain removed the implicated lettuce from all U.S. restaurants on 17 July and later offered lettuce‑free promotions, such as a $1 Mexican pizza, to win back customers. Sales at Taco Bell fell about 2 % in the current quarter, with the steepest drop on the weekend of 18‑19 July. Yum! Brands, Taco Bell’s parent, posted a Q2 net profit of $853 million – more than double the prior year – while its stock slipped roughly 8‑10 % after the outbreak was tied to the brand. Health officials continue to advise thorough washing of fresh produce and caution travelers returning from Mexico, where the parasite is endemic.
