Tahiti shifts to sustainable tourism and expands air links ahead of direct Sydney service

Tahiti announced that it reached its visitor‑capacity threshold of one tourist per resident in 2025, prompting a strategic shift from volume‑focused marketing to stewardship of natural, cultural and community assets. The destination’s new Fāriʻiraʻa Manihini 2027 plan outlines 95 actions aimed at balancing economic needs with strict environmental limits.

At the same time, the Islands of Tahiti are enhancing connectivity for Australian visitors. Air Tahiti will continue service to 34 remote islands, while a partnership with Apetahi Express adds combined flight‑and‑ferry tickets to Maupiti. Air Moana has added a fourth ATR‑72 aircraft, and Air Tahiti Nui will launch a direct Sydney‑Papeete flight in December 2026. Additional initiatives include a single‑ticket option linking international flights with domestic hops, new cruise visits, and the reopening of the Paul Gauguin Museum in late 2026.
