In early July 2026, Tahiti announced that it had reached its visitor‑capacity limit of one tourist per resident the previous year. The government shifted from a volume‑driven strategy to a stewardship‑focused approach, unveiling the Fāriʻiraʻa Manihini 2027 plan with 95 actions to balance economic growth with strict environmental limits.

Air connectivity was expanded: Air Tahiti added routes to remote islands, a partnership introduced flight‑and‑ferry tickets to Maupiti, Air Moana brought a fourth ATR‑72 into service, and Air Tahiti Nui prepared a direct Sydney‑Papeete flight for December 2026. A single‑ticket system now links international and domestic travel, new cruise visits were promoted, and the Paul Gauguin Museum reopened.

Papeete’s port continues to cement its role as the premier gateway for South‑Pacific cruise tourism. The Te Anuanua Cruise Terminal, opened in early 2025, provides organized berthing, lounges, luggage storage and retail space, while nearby hotels such as Hilton Tahiti and InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa serve cruise guests. Local vessels Aranui and the Paul Gauguin (now operated by Ponant) support the traffic. In 2026 the port recorded a 25 % rise in cruise ship calls, with a further 10 % increase expected in 2027.
