Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu identifies status inequality as core Cyprus issue
Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu has stated that the lack of consensus on how to define the Cyprus problem renders any expressed will for a solution ineffective. He noted that while both sides claim a desire for resolution, negotiations have failed for years because one side’s perceived solution is viewed as a problem by the other.
Ertuğruloğlu identified the fundamental issue as one of status inequality. He argued that the Greek Cypriot administration is treated as a state, whereas the Turkish Cypriot side is relegated to the status of a community. He asserted that as long as these unequal conditions persist, a meaningful solution remains impossible.
Furthermore, Ertuğruloğlu criticized the United Nations Security Council and the European Union, suggesting that their current stances perpetuate the issue rather than resolving it. He maintained that international efforts will not satisfy the Turkish Cypriot people unless past errors by these global actors are corrected.
