Taipei mayoral race: Shen Po-yang and Chiang Wan-an within 1.2% in recent poll

Recent polling for the 2026 Taipei mayoral election indicates a tightening race between incumbent Chiang Wan-an and Democratic Progressive Party candidate Shen Po-yang. A survey conducted by the Xinjin Association shows the two candidates are separated by only 1.2 percentage points.

Taipei City Councilor Qin Huizhu has provided a different analysis, suggesting that while the poll shows a narrow gap, the final outcome may see Chiang Wan-an securing approximately 55% of the vote and Shen Po-yang receiving 43.5%. Qin noted that current political trends often lead supporters of the Kuomintang to identify as neutral or hidden voters.

The rise in Shen Po-yang’s visibility, often referred to as the ‘ocean current’ phenomenon, has sparked discussions regarding his impact on other Democratic Progressive Party candidates, such as Su Chiao-hui in New Taipei City. While some observers suggest Shen’s increased media presence could overshadow other regional candidates, others argue the two candidates possess complementary support bases and different communication styles.
