Taiwan accuses China of election interference via family business sanctions
Taiwan's government has accused China of attempting to influence upcoming municipal elections by imposing sanctions on a business linked to the family of a political candidate. China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) announced sanctions against VWAY Co., a company owned by Shen Tu-cheng, the father of Puma Shen, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate for Taipei mayor.
The move follows reports from pro-Beijing Hong Kong media outlets alleging that the family business attempted to evade previous sanctions by conducting approximately $700,000 in trade with Chinese companies through VWAY. China's TAO spokesperson, Chen Binhua, stated the sanctions were a response to efforts to bypass existing restrictions.
Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) condemned the actions, characterizing them as a coordinated effort to pressure political candidates and sway public opinion. Puma Shen has dismissed the allegations, describing them as recycled political attacks and noting that his family's business activities have been misrepresented.
