China-Taiwan political sanctions dispute
Overview
China has imposed sanctions on VWAY, a company owned by Shen Tu-cheng, the father of Taiwanese lawmaker and Taipei mayoral candidate Puma Shen. The Taiwan Affairs Office announced the measures on October 14, prohibiting the company from conducting transactions or cooperating with Chinese businesses, organizations, and individuals.
Beijing stated the sanctions were a response to efforts to bypass existing restrictions, following reports from pro-Beijing media alleging the company attempted to evade previous sanctions through approximately $700,000 in trade with Chinese firms. Puma Shen has dismissed these allegations as “recycled political attacks” and noted his family’s business dealings have been with Ecuador.
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) condemned the move, characterizing it as a coordinated effort to pressure political candidates and influence upcoming municipal elections. The MAC accused China of attempting to sway public opinion through these sanctions.
