Taiwan election bribery investigations lead to multiple arrests
Authorities in Taiwan have launched several investigations into election bribery involving local candidates across multiple regions. In Zhuxi Township, Chiayi County, a village chief candidate surnamed Wang was released on 50,000 TWD bail after being accused of distributing cash and gifts ranging from 3,000 to 20,000 TWD to voters between September and October.
In Taitung County, a township representative candidate surnamed Tsai was detained after allegedly providing live chickens to voters in exchange for support. Similarly, in Taoyuan City, a village chief candidate surnamed Liu was investigated for distributing 1.7kg bags of rice to residents through intermediaries.
In Taichung City, a former village chief and a current candidate were detained for allegedly organizing subsidized trips to Tainan and Changhua to solicit votes. Prosecutors noted that the trips provided significant travel benefits to participants, which were used as a means to influence voting behavior.
