Taiwan bolsters AI power infrastructure via gas engines and state investment

Taiwan is intensifying efforts to secure power infrastructure for the expanding AI data center sector. To address the 'Time to Power' challenge, Hanji, the Taiwan agent for Volvo Penta, has secured a supply of 100 gas power generation engines scheduled for delivery through 2027. These units, providing approximately 40 MW of capacity, aim to support self-contained power solutions for data centers as grid construction struggles to keep pace with demand.

On a national level, Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs, Kung Ming-hsin, announced government initiatives to bolster computing power and energy. The government plans to allocate 100 billion TWD over the next eight years to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in adopting AI technologies. To ensure stable electricity, the government plans to bring 25 large-scale natural gas units online over the next decade, providing 26 GW of capacity. Combined with renewable energy sources, these efforts aim to provide an additional 200 billion kWh of electricity annually dedicated to supporting domestic AI development.
