AI infrastructure energy and growth challenges

Overview

The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is encountering significant challenges regarding growth sustainability and electricity availability. In the United States, market analysts have raised concerns that the momentum in AI networking may be peaking, while projections suggest a potential power shortage of 33GW by 2028. This energy bottleneck is driving interest in onsite power generation and ‘behind-the-meter’ equipment to bypass public grid delays.

In response to similar energy demands, Taiwan is implementing both private and state-led infrastructure measures. To address the ‘Time to Power’ challenge, local agents have secured a supply of 100 gas power generation engines to provide self-contained power for data centers. Additionally, the Taiwanese government has announced plans to allocate 100 billion TWD over eight years to support AI adoption by small and medium enterprises, alongside a decade-long initiative to bring 25 large-scale natural gas units online to bolster the national electricity supply.
