Taiwan CDC reports rising COVID-19 and influenza cases

Taiwan is experiencing a simultaneous rise in COVID-19 and influenza cases. The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that in a recent week, there were 84 local COVID-19 severe cases and 12 deaths, alongside 80 influenza severe cases and 17 deaths.

Data indicates that elderly populations (aged 65 and above) are at significantly higher risk, accounting for approximately 73.9% of COVID-19 severe cases. A high proportion of these severe cases involve individuals with chronic illnesses who have not received the current season's vaccines.

To combat these trends, the CDC will implement a ‘left flu, right new’ strategy starting October 1, 2026, which involves the simultaneous rollout of influenza and next-generation COVID-19 vaccines. The new COVID-19 vaccines are designed with lower mRNA doses to potentially reduce side effects. The government aims to increase the vaccination rate for seniors to 35% by May 2027. Additionally, the CDC has expanded the eligibility for government-funded influenza antiviral medications through September 30 to support high-risk groups and frontline workers.
