Taiwan COVID vaccine rollout amid surge

In late July 2026 Taiwan’s health authorities extended free COVID‑19 vaccination to everyone aged six months and older through 28 September, responding to a rise in cases and co‑circulating influenza. A localized shortage in Taipei prompted the reallocation of 6,000 doses to meet heightened demand.

By the week of 19‑26 July, emergency‑room visits jumped 112 %, and several counties reported sharp case spikes. Nantou County saw eight severe cases, one fatal, and its public‑funded vaccine stock fell to roughly 400 doses, prompting officials to urge rapid vaccination. The central government facilitated an emergency delivery of 6,000 doses to Taipei, arriving on 27‑28 July and earmarked for contracted clinics and the 12 outpatient sites of Taipei City Hospital. The city had initially requested 1,900 doses but added 4,100 after demand surged.

Pingtung County highlighted that 92.5 % of recent severe cases were unvaccinated and called for vaccination, mask use, hand‑washing and ventilation. The free‑vaccination program continues to cover all residents up to 28 September, aiming to curb the upward trend and protect high‑risk groups.
