Taiwan establishes World Alliance for Disaster Management

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te announced the establishment of the World Alliance for Disaster Management (WADM) in Taipei on September 19, 2026. The initiative aims to position Taiwan as a cross-border coordination hub for humanitarian assistance and disaster risk reduction.

Formed alongside diplomatic allies, including founding member Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the WADM is supported by twenty-one partner nations and observers such as the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The alliance seeks to move beyond traditional emergency relief by adopting a paradigm of “Prepare Better Together.”

The organization intends to leverage infrastructure like Taiwan’s National Fire Agency Training Center in Zhushan, Nantou, to facilitate advanced training, technology exchange, and real-time operational coordination to address increasing global vulnerabilities caused by climate change and unpredictable natural disasters.
