Taiwan expands vaccine options as influenza and COVID-19 shots surge

Taiwan's public influenza and COVID-19 vaccination programs have seen significant uptake since October 1. As of October 12, influenza vaccinations reached approximately 2.26 million doses, a 16% increase compared to the same period last year. COVID-19 vaccinations surpassed 781,000 doses, representing a 50% increase over the previous year.

To expand options, the government will introduce the Novavax XFG COVID-19 vaccine for eligible individuals aged 12 and older starting October 19. An additional 174,000 doses of Novavax are being procured to meet demand. Currently, eligible individuals aged 12 and older can choose between Moderna or Novavax, while those aged 6 months to 11 years are limited to Moderna XFG.

To encourage participation, the government has implemented a ‘Health Coin’ incentive program for residents aged 18 and older. Completing designated vaccinations earns rewards: 900 coins for COVID-19, 450 for influenza, and 600 for pneumococcal vaccines.

Health officials report that while influenza cases are trending downward, the virus remains in a circulation period, with H1N1 being the dominant strain. Medical professionals emphasize the importance of vaccination for high-risk groups, including the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, to reduce the risk of severe illness and death.
