Taiwan Extends Free COVID Vaccine Rollout as August Cases Surge

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control expects a surge in August, with weekly emergency department visits potentially exceeding 50,000. To address the rise, the government has extended free COVID‑19 vaccination for anyone aged six months and older who has not yet received the current season's dose, now available through 28 September. About 440,000 public‑funded vaccine doses remain, including roughly 44 000 Moderna doses and a small stock of Novavax, along with sufficient antiviral supplies.

Health officials also warn that seasonal influenza remains active, raising the risk of simultaneous COVID‑19 and flu infections. Studies indicate co‑infection rates of up to 2.5 %, higher among older adults, pregnant women, children, and those with chronic conditions. Doctors advise testing for both viruses when symptoms are severe and recommend prompt medical care for high‑risk patients to avoid complications such as pneumonia or respiratory failure.
