Taiwan health bureaus launch e-cigarette recycling programs

Local health authorities in Taiwan are launching e-cigarette recycling initiatives following proposed legislative changes to the Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act. Under the proposed amendments, the mere possession of e-cigarettes could result in fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$100,000, moving beyond current laws that focus on manufacturing, sale, and use.

In response, the Lienchiang County Health Bureau has organized a month-long recycling program from September 7 to October 6 across Matsu, including Nangan, Beigan, Dongju, Xiju, and Dongyin. To encourage participation, the program allows for anonymous disposal without requiring personal information. Collection points are located at the Health Bureau in Nangan and various health centers or pharmacies in the other islands.

Similarly, the Nantou County Health Bureau began placing e-cigarette recycling bins in 13 townships on September 7. Authorities emphasize that while the legislative amendments are still under review by the Legislative Yuan, these recycling efforts aim to help citizens dispose of existing products during potential buffer periods to avoid future penalties.
