Taiwan health officials warn of rising influenza and enterovirus outbreaks

Taiwan is experiencing a simultaneous rise in several infectious diseases. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that influenza cases are increasing, with outpatient visits rising 16.5% in a single week. Between September 8 and September 14, there were 92 new severe influenza cases and 21 deaths, with the H1N1 strain being the predominant virus in the community.

While COVID-19 cases are trending downward, the virus remains in a circulation period. During the same period in September, 53 new local severe cases and 18 deaths were recorded. The CDC noted that a high percentage of severe cases among both influenza and COVID-19 patients were individuals aged 65 or older or those with chronic medical conditions.

Additionally, enterovirus infections are surging, with outpatient visits exceeding 10,000 last week, an 18.1% increase. Health officials expect the enterovirus epidemic to reach its peak this week, with weekly visits potentially hitting between 12,000 and 14,000. The CDC has advised parents to increase hygiene measures, such as handwashing and environmental disinfection, to protect young children.
