Taiwan household structure shifts as small families exceed 50%

Data from the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics reveals a significant shift in Taiwan's household structure. For the first time, households consisting of two or fewer people account for more than half of the total, reaching 51.6%.

Specifically, two-person households represent the largest group at 34.27%, followed by three-person households at 23.21%. Notably, one-person households have risen to 17.33%, surpassing the proportion of four-person households (16.63%) for the first time. This trend marks a departure from the 1990s, when four- and five-person households were the norm.

The report also indicates that the homeownership rate has declined for the fourth consecutive year, falling to 83.95%. Due to adjustments in statistical definitions, this represents the lowest level recorded since 2010.
