Taiwan Labor Minister visits China for APEC meeting

Taiwanese Labor Minister Hung Sun-han traveled to Nanjing, China, to attend the APEC Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting. This marks the first trip to mainland China by a senior official since President Lai Ching-te assumed office in May 2024.

Hung stated that his participation is based on the principles of “parity and dignity” and follows existing patterns for Taiwan’s involvement in the forum. The visit occurs amid heightened cross-strait tensions, as Beijing views the Democratic Progressive Party administration as separatist. While previous officials, such as trade negotiator Yang Jen-ni, have visited China for APEC meetings this year, Hung’s presence as a cabinet-level official is noted for its rarity under the current administration.

Political observers have offered varying interpretations of the trip. Some suggest the move carries electoral implications for the ruling party, while others criticize the ministry for maintaining a low profile regarding the minister's itinerary. The APEC ministerial meetings serve as a precursor to the Economic Leaders’ Meeting scheduled for November in Shenzhen.
