Taiwan Ministry of Education plans to add 1,600 special education assistants
Taiwan's Ministry of Education is planning to add 1,600 monthly-salaried special education student assistants between the 2024 and 2027 academic years to support inclusive education. During a report to the Legislative Yuan, Deputy Minister Chang Liao-wan-chien stated that the initiative aims to provide better support for students with disabilities learning in general classrooms.
The Ministry has also seen an increase of 1,235 qualified special education teachers for the 2024-2025 academic year. Financial incentives are being provided to local governments that meet teacher-to-student ratio targets, with subsidies of 500,000 TWD per additional teacher for three consecutive years.
To address emotional and behavioral issues, the Ministry has trained 156 professional support teachers across 22 counties. Additionally, the Ministry has suggested strengthening parental responsibility and integrating educational, medical, and social resources to better support children's welfare.
