Taiwan observes Traffic Safety Month with focus on motorcycle safety

Taiwan is observing Traffic Safety Month, with a focus on motorcycle safety and promoting a culture of yielding at intersections. In Changhua County, officials launched a campaign themed ‘Yield More When Riding to Ensure Safety at Intersections.’ County Magistrate Wang Huei-mei reported that motorcycle fatalities in the region decreased by 19% during the first half of the year compared to the previous year.

The Changhua County Government is implementing diverse safety measures, including educational programs for students, elderly citizens, and migrant workers, as well as improving road engineering and enforcement. Nationally, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has partnered with over 7,000 motorcycle shops to provide free safety inspections.

Despite these efforts, some critics argue that government resources should prioritize structural road improvements and driver training reforms over promotional campaigns. Discussions have emerged regarding whether safety initiatives should focus more on eliminating physical hazards, such as poor signaling and blind spots, rather than relying solely on public awareness slogans.
