Taiwan postpones electricity rate decision to December
Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has decided to postpone any decisions regarding electricity rate adjustments until December. The Electricity Rate Review Committee met to discuss the impact of rising international fuel costs driven by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
According to the Ministry, Taipower faced a potential rate increase of 12.83% due to these soaring fuel expenses. To prevent domestic price volatility and inflation, the committee has opted to prioritize securing NT$71.1 billion in government subsidies to alleviate Taipower’s financial pressure.
The committee will revisit the matter in December during the third review meeting, which will also include discussions on transmission and distribution rates. This delay means any potential rate hikes may not occur until at least January of next year. The decision also considers the growing electricity demands of the semiconductor and AI industries alongside the economic challenges faced by traditional manufacturing sectors.
