Taiwan procures record 7 million influenza vaccine doses

Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has announced a record procurement of over 7 million doses of influenza vaccines for the upcoming season. This includes the first-ever introduction of 200,000 doses of enhanced influenza vaccines, such as high-dose and adjuvanted versions, which are prioritized for seniors aged 65 and older in long-term care facilities. The enhanced vaccines are expected to increase protection by 25% to 30%.

In addition to influenza, the CDC has procured 2.4 million COVID-19 vaccine doses, including 1.9 million next-generation vaccines for individuals aged 12 and older, aimed at reducing side effects and better matching current virus trends.

To encourage vaccination, the Ministry of Health and Welfare will launch the ‘Health Coin’ policy in October. Adults aged 18 and older can earn points by receiving influenza, COVID-19, or pneumococcal vaccines—regardless of whether they are publicly funded or self-paid. These points can be redeemed for healthy food items at participating convenience stores and supermarkets. The amount of Health Coins awarded will vary based on the vaccination rate of each specific vaccine, with lower rates potentially receiving higher incentives.

Vaccination for high-risk groups, including seniors and young children, begins on October 1, while the second phase for adults aged 50 to 64 without high-risk chronic conditions will start on November 2.
