Taiwan receives first two F-16V fighter jets from US

Taiwan has received the first two of 66 new F-16V fighter jets ordered from the United States in 2019. The aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, landed at the Taitung air base on the island’s east coast following months of delivery delays caused by issues such as software problems.

The $8 billion procurement deal is intended to bolster Taiwan’s air defense capabilities amid rising military pressure from China. Defence Minister Wellington Koo confirmed that additional F-16V jets are expected to arrive soon, though he noted it might be difficult to complete the full delivery by the end of the year.

The arrival occurs as Taiwan awaits potential approval from Washington for a separate $14 billion military arms package. The jets traveled via refueling stops in Hawaii and Guam before arriving in Taiwan.
