Taiwan-U.S. F-16 fighter jet delivery delays

Overview

The delivery of 66 F-16V (Block 70) fighter jets purchased by Taiwan from the United States has encountered significant delays. Initially, reports focused on the unexpected delay of the first two aircraft, which remained at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii for over two weeks instead of proceeding to Taiwan.

As the situation progressed, it became clear that production line constraints and technical issues have impacted the broader procurement program. While the original schedule aimed for completion by late 2026, some projections suggest deliveries may be pushed back to 2028. Because these government-to-government transactions lack penalty clauses for cash refunds, Taiwan is negotiating for non-cash compensation, such as additional spare parts or extended warranties.

Following these delays, which included software problems, the first two F-16V fighter jets have now arrived at Taiwan’s Taitung air base on the island’s east coast. These aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, traveled via refueling stops in Hawaii and Guam.

This shipment is part of an $8 billion deal approved by the United States in 2019, intended to bring Taiwan’s total F-16 fleet to over 200 jets. Defense Minister Wellington Koo confirmed the arrival and noted that while additional jets are expected soon, it might be difficult to complete the full delivery by the end of the year. The arrival occurs as Taiwan awaits potential approval from Washington for a separate $14 billion military arms package, amid heightened regional tensions and concerns regarding the consistency of U.S. arms support.
