Taiwan representative appeals to Brazil for UN membership support

Benito Liao, Taiwan’s representative in Brazil, has issued an appeal to the Brazilian people to support Taiwan’s inclusion in the United Nations. Liao emphasized Taiwan’s critical role in the global economy, specifically noting its importance in semiconductor manufacturing, the artificial intelligence industry, and the global technology supply chain.

Liao also highlighted the strategic importance of the Taiwan Strait, which serves as a vital international maritime route for approximately half of the world’s cargo ships. He argued that the security and stability of Taiwan are essential for global economic development.

Addressing the current UN General Assembly theme, Liao criticized the exclusion of Taiwan’s 23.5 million residents from the UN and its specialized agencies. He characterized the UN’s treatment of Taiwan as discriminatory, citing instances where Taiwanese passport holders and journalists have been denied entry for UN-related activities. Liao further stated that China has misinterpreted UN Resolution 2758 to mislead the international community.
