Taiwan targets Indonesian tourists with Muslim-friendly travel focus
Taiwan is intensifying its tourism promotion in Indonesia, specifically targeting the year-end and New Year holiday period to attract Indonesian travelers. This strategy follows data from Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) showing that Indonesian overseas travel reached 9.16 million trips in 2025.
A key component of this initiative is the enhancement of Muslim-friendly tourism facilities. To provide comfort and confidence to Muslim travelers, Taiwan is focusing on the availability of halal food, Muslim-friendly accommodations, prayer rooms, and wudu facilities. These efforts aim to bolster Taiwan's standing in the 2026 Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), where it currently ranks third globally in the non-OIC destination category, alongside the United Kingdom.
Beyond religious considerations, Taiwan is promoting diverse destinations and activities to cater to evolving travel patterns. While Taipei remains a major hub, officials are highlighting locations such as Alishan, Sun Moon Lake, hot spring areas, and night markets. There is also an increasing focus on lifestyle-based tourism, including hiking, cycling, marathons, rural exploration, and train travel.
