Taiwanese comedian Huang Yi-hao targeted in alleged cross-border attack
Taiwanese crosstalk comedian Huang Yi-hao has reportedly been the target of a cross-border crackdown orchestrated by Chinese interests. Following a performance in which he used humor to satirize Chinese President Xi Jinping, Huang’s comedy club was vandalized with feces and paint.
Investigations by prosecutors revealed that the attacks were planned by individuals from mainland China. Huang was also subjected to surveillance and a targeted attempt to cause a vehicle collision, which resulted in injuries.
Despite the incidents, Huang stated that the situation felt more “absurd than frightening” and expressed disbelief that a leader of a nation of 1.4 billion people would deploy resources against a comedian. He has affirmed his commitment to comedy and intends to continue his creative work, including incorporating his experiences into upcoming performances.
