Taiwanese hospitals expand community health and dementia care services

Major medical institutions in Taiwan are expanding community-based health services to address the challenges of an aging society and rising dementia rates.

Kaohsiung Municipal Fengshan Hospital has inaugurated the ‘Zhongzheng Ruizhi Academy’ in Fengshan District. Under the guidance of the Kaohsiung City Government Health Bureau, the center utilizes a dual-service model: morning sessions focus on dementia care—including cognitive stimulation and reminiscence therapy—while afternoon sessions target sub-healthy and pre-frail elderly individuals through muscle training and chronic disease management. The initiative aims to integrate medical, long-term care, and community resources to support aging in place.

In Taipei, MacKay Memorial Hospital is scaling its community health promotion efforts to align with international standards. The hospital has established 79 community health service stations across 14 districts in the New Taipei and Taipei areas. Their services include dementia support hubs, brain health programs, and comprehensive functional assessments for the elderly. Additionally, the hospital provides workplace health promotion, pediatric screenings, and advance medical planning consultations, utilizing cloud-based systems to manage community health measurements.
