Taiz faces humanitarian crisis as military escalations close key supply routes

The city of Taiz in Yemen is facing a severe humanitarian crisis due to renewed military escalations and road closures that have effectively besieged the area. Since early October, several key supply routes and entrances connecting the city to surrounding provinces have been shut down, cutting off essential supplies of food, fuel, and basic necessities.

Local statistics indicate that approximately 2.8 million people in the Taiz governorate are affected by these closures, while the city itself has a population of roughly 915,000. Six major access points have been disrupted, including routes toward Al-Hubaish, Al-Hodeidah, and Aden. The closure of these arteries has led to acute shortages and a rapid increase in commodity prices.

As a result of the primary road closures, drivers and travelers are being forced to use long, rugged, and unpaved alternative routes. These secondary paths expose commuters to significant physical danger and the risk of being caught in active combat zones. The use of these detour routes has also significantly increased transportation costs and travel times for residents attempting to move between Taiz, Aden, and other regional hubs.
