Taiz faces humanitarian catastrophe as Houthi siege tightens

The Yemeni government and the Ministry of Public Health have issued urgent warnings regarding an imminent humanitarian and health catastrophe in Taiz. A tightening siege by Houthi forces has expanded to cover most districts of the governorate, threatening the lives and livelihoods of over six million people.

Medical facilities in Taiz are facing a near-total collapse due to critical shortages of medicines, intravenous fluids, medical supplies, and oxygen. The Ministry of Public Health warned that the depletion of fuel reserves threatens to paralyze electricity generators, ambulance fleets, and the cold-chain systems essential for preserving vaccines and medications. This shortage puts emergency care, surgical units, intensive care, dialysis, and neonatal services at immediate risk of suspension.

Military escalations have further exacerbated the crisis. Houthi forces recently captured the town of al-Turbah, severing the primary road connecting Taiz to other government-held areas. In response, the Yemeni government has called on the United Nations and international humanitarian organizations to intervene immediately by providing essential medical supplies and fuel, and to pressure the Houthis to lift the siege and ensure safe passage for patients and aid workers.
