Yemen military escalation intensifies in Taiz, Lahj, and Marib
Military operations in Yemen have escalated significantly across several fronts, including Taiz, Lahj, Marib, and Al-Bayda. Fighting between government forces and Houthi rebels has intensified, leading to a surge in displacement, with over 158,000 people reported displaced across eight provinces.
In Taiz, government forces and tribal fighters have reportedly reclaimed strategic positions in the western and southern fronts. Meanwhile, Houthi forces have targeted civilian areas, including a ballistic missile strike on a popular market in the Ras al-Ara area of Lahj, resulting in civilian injuries. The Yemeni Armed Forces also reported shooting down a Houthi drone in the Al-Kadha front.
In response to the escalation, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed that his group observed 157 airstrikes and missile attacks, which he attributed to Saudi Arabia. The total number of strikes since the start of the recent escalation has reportedly reached 917. In the Al-Makha region of Taiz, local sources reported more than ten airstrikes occurring during the early hours of September 22.
