Taiz humanitarian crisis worsens amid Houthi blockade and fighting

The city of Taiz in Yemen is facing a severe humanitarian catastrophe due to a Houthi blockade and intensified military clashes. Since early October 2026, the blockade has obstructed essential supplies, including food, fuel, medicine, and water. The World Food Programme reports that approximately 600,000 people in the city are unable to access aid, with the total number of people affected by humanitarian access cuts in Yemen reaching 800,000.

Critical shortages are impacting the healthcare sector. Approximately 98 health facilities are partially operational or out of service, and 42 facilities face acute shortages of medical supplies and oxygen. The lack of fuel threatens life-saving services, including dialysis, oncology, and neonatal care. Specifically, 1,110 kidney failure patients are at risk, and 154 children in incubators face life-threatening conditions due to fuel and medical supply shortages.

Water scarcity has reached a critical point. Water production in Taiz has decreased by approximately half, and the cost of water delivered by truck has nearly tripled due to diesel shortages and blocked routes. Additionally, UNICEF has identified 52,000 cases of acute malnutrition in the region.

Military activity remains high, with government forces conducting airstrikes against Houthi positions and repelling attacks in areas like the Al-Aqroud front. Human rights organizations have documented significant civilian casualties and damage to residential homes resulting from ongoing shelling and sniper fire.
