Yemen: Fighting intensifies in Taiz as humanitarian crisis worsens

Military operations have escalated across multiple fronts in Yemen, particularly in the Taiz governorate. Yemeni government forces reported conducting 749 targeted operations within a 24-hour period, claiming to have neutralized 239 Houthi fighters and destroyed or damaged 117 military vehicles.

In Taiz, fighting has intensified on the Al-Aqroudh and Al-Masrakh fronts. Houthi-affiliated media reported airstrikes against Mocha and its port, while government forces reported repelling Houthi attacks near Jabal Sabr. The conflict has led to significant civilian impact, including the reported targeting of an ambulance and residential areas with shelling.

The humanitarian situation is critical. The UN warns that approximately 800,000 people are trapped in Taiz, where access to essential services like water is being restricted due to shifting frontlines. Human Rights Watch has described the siege of Taiz as a possible war crime of starvation.

Additionally, the UNHCR reported that over 280,000 Yemenis have been displaced since August, and the agency’s humanitarian appeal for the country is only 19 percent funded. Meanwhile, flights at Aden International Airport have resumed following a temporary suspension caused by missile strikes near the facility.
