Takeshi Iwaya receives high-level reception during visit to China

Takeshi Iwaya, former Japanese Foreign Minister and current Chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, received high-level reception during a recent visit to Beijing. This visit marks a significant shift in engagement following a ten-month period of frozen high-level interactions between China and Japan, largely due to tensions surrounding Taiwan and statements made by Japanese political figures.

During the visit, Iwaya held meetings with top Chinese officials, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vice Premier He Lifeng. The high level of hospitality is viewed by analysts as a selective form of engagement by Beijing, aimed at maintaining communication with Japanese business and political circles while maintaining pressure on the current Japanese administration regarding its stance on Taiwan.

He Lifeng noted that certain Japanese politicians’ actions regarding the Taiwan issue and militarism have impacted bilateral economic development. Accompanying Iwaya was a delegation of 50 Japanese business executives, highlighting the private sector's concern over deteriorating relations and its impact on supply chains and market access. While some Japanese officials view the meetings as a sign of potential improvement, others remain cautious about the underlying political messages being sent by China.
