Taliban support for TTP drives rise in Pakistan attacks, UN report finds
A United Nations Security Council-mandated report states that the Afghan Taliban's continued support for the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has fueled an increase in the frequency and lethality of terrorist attacks in Pakistan. The 38th report of the UN Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, covering December 2025 to June 2026, notes that cross-border attacks have escalated, leading to military exchanges between the two nations.
The report highlights growing operational and facilitation links between the TTP and other militant groups, including Al Qaeda, Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIL-K), and the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA). While the Taliban has taken some steps to manage the TTP—such as relocating approximately 2,000 fighters and their families away from the Pakistani border—the report suggests these measures have not broken the group's ties to the Taliban.
Additionally, Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada reportedly issued backchannel warnings to TTP leadership to cease attacks on Pakistan or risk losing Taliban support. Meanwhile, data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies indicates a significant rise in violence, with July seeing the highest monthly militant death toll in over a decade.
