Overview
A United Nations report indicates that the Afghan Taliban’s support for the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has increased the frequency and lethality of terrorist attacks in Pakistan. The report, covering December 2025 to June 2026, notes escalating cross-border attacks and growing links between the TTP and groups such as Al Qaeda, ISIL-K, and the Baloch Liberation Army. While the Taliban reportedly relocated some fighters away from the border and issued backchannel warnings to the TTP to cease attacks, these measures have not severed militant ties.
Following these findings, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, expressed concern that the Taliban regime is destabilizing the region. He stated that Afghanistan has become a “safe haven for a number of terrorist groups” and noted that the international community remains frustrated by the Taliban’s failure to meet benchmarks regarding inclusive governance, human rights, and guarantees that Afghan soil will not be used for terrorist activities.
