Tallinn Police Detain Suspects in Explosion and Courier Fraud Cases

On July 19, a blast occurred at a metal‑recycling site on Paljassaare road in north‑west Tallinn. Police, emergency crews, bomb‑dogs and a de‑miner responded. The explosion, caused by a training grenade, injured no one. A 58‑year‑old man suspected of organizing the blast was arrested later that day in Lasnamäe and placed in custody for two months pending further investigation.

Two days later, on July 21, police in Tallinn arrested two brothers, a 24‑year‑old and an 18‑year‑old, suspected of operating a nationwide courier‑fraud scheme. The fraud involved impersonating telecom, bank and police officials to convince victims to hand over cash and bank cards, after which a courier delivered the money to the perpetrators. In the older brother’s possession authorities found roughly €3,000 in cash, nine bank cards and an ID card. The brothers are linked to up to ten similar fraud incidents across Estonia.
