Tamarugal colloquium addresses protection of indigenous cultural sites
More than 150 representatives from indigenous communities, academics, and institutional actors participated in a colloquium focused on the recognition and protection of cultural significance sites in the Tamarugal province. The event was held as part of an occupational study agreement between the National Corporation for Indigenous Development (CONADI) and the University of Tarapacá (UTA).
A central theme of the discussions was the relationship between historical land occupation and ownership processes and the preservation of spaces vital to indigenous peoples. Experts addressed various dimensions of this issue, including the evolution of Aymara and Quechua property from traditional ayllus to current parcel regimes, and the management of fiscal property related to indigenous groups.
Legal experts also analyzed the tensions surrounding the recognition of indigenous cultural territories. They noted that historical property processes have impacted the recognition of significant sites such as petroglyphs, apachetas, and spiritual locations like cemeteries. The colloquium aimed to recover ancestral succession data to advance solutions regarding land use.
