Mexican political parties prepare for 2026-2027 elections

Political parties and electoral authorities in Mexico are initiating preparations for the 2026-2027 electoral cycle. In Tamaulipas, the Instituto Electoral de Tamaulipas (IETAM) is developing its budget draft for the concurrent elections, while the National Electoral Institute (INE) has not ruled out requesting additional funds to ensure logistical and territorial coverage, noting that “democracy costs.”

Several political parties, including PAN, PVEM, PAZ, and PT, have already submitted their intentions to participate in the process. Meanwhile, political shifts are occurring: Juan José Salazar Hernández has resigned from Movimiento Ciudadano in Tamaulipas, citing internal issues, and the PT in Veracruz is undergoing structural reviews following the departure of Vicente Aguilar Aguilar.

In response to the upcoming cycle, the PVEM has proposed a pact to prevent candidates with criminal ties from running, and Morena leaders have called for organizational unity to secure future victories. The PRI has expressed confidence in local IETAM authorities while criticizing the INE, stating they will file complaints regarding potential early campaigning acts.
