Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal Heads Sea Turtle Release Closure

Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas led the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2026 sea‑turtle release season at the La Pesca beach camp. During the events he oversaw the release of hatchlings of the loggerhead sea turtle (tortuga lora) and, in smaller numbers, green turtles, highlighting the state’s ongoing commitment to protect the species through coordinated action by authorities, specialists, volunteers and local families.

The season recorded the release of 231,115 hatchlings across six camps, including 230,773 loggerheads and 342 green turtles. At the final ceremony on 26 July, 342 hatchlings – 57 loggerheads and 285 green turtles – were released, and officials reiterated the goal of preserving Gulf biodiversity for future generations.
