Tamaulipas Health Officials Report Over 21,000 Diarrhea Cases in 2026

Acute diarrheal illnesses have affected 21,792 people in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas so far in 2026, according to Iván Alejandro Ramírez Moncada, director of the District Health Office for Welfare No. 1 in Ciudad Victoria. Children under five account for the largest share of cases.

June recorded the highest number of consultations, with 4,066 patients, while July saw a decline to 1,772, a drop the health office attributes to reduced medical visits during the vacation period rather than a true decrease in disease spread. Officials warned that the summer heat accelerates food spoilage and raises the risk of gastrointestinal infections. They urged the public to reinforce hygiene measures—frequent hand washing, proper washing and disinfection of fruits and vegetables, safe food storage, and consumption of potable water—and to avoid self‑medication. Anyone, especially children, showing signs of diarrhea or dehydration should seek prompt medical attention.

The health department confirmed that medical units remain fully operational throughout the vacation period and emphasized the importance of early care to prevent complications.
