Algeria launches national seasonal influenza vaccination campaign
The Algerian Ministry of Health has launched its national vaccination campaign against seasonal influenza for the 2026-2027 season. The initiative aims to protect vulnerable populations, including children with chronic illnesses, the elderly, pregnant women, and healthcare professionals, to prevent pressure on the national health system.
More than 2 million doses are available, with 1.6 million already distributed to health facilities across the country. The vaccine is produced locally in Algeria through a strategic partnership between the Saïdal group and Abbott laboratories, a move intended to strengthen the nation's health sovereignty.
Health authorities, including the Institut Pasteur d'Algérie, have emphasized the importance of early vaccination, noting that immunity takes approximately three weeks to develop. Local health directorates are coordinating the rollout through polyclinics and maternal and child health centers to monitor coverage and any potential side effects.
