North African seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns

Overview

National seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns have been initiated in Tunisia and Algeria for the 2026-2027 period.

In Tunisia, the campaign has commenced with a focus on high-risk groups and healthcare workers. The Central Pharmacy has distributed 280,000 doses. While the purchase price of the vaccine has decreased from approximately 40dt last year to between 23.3dt and 24.1dt this year, health officials clarify that efficacy remains high. This price reduction is attributed to the transition from a quadrivalent vaccine to a trivalent vaccine, which targets three specific strains: A H1N1, the K variant of A H3N2, and B-Victoria. Vaccines are distributed through private pharmacies, basic health centers, and public health establishments.

Algeria has launched its campaign with over 2 million doses available, 1.6 million of which have already been distributed. To strengthen health sovereignty, the vaccine is produced locally through a partnership between the Saïdal group and Abbott laboratories. The rollout is being coordinated through polyclinics and maternal and child health centers, targeting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and healthcare professionals. Health authorities, including the Institut Pasteur d'Algérie, have emphasized the importance of early vaccination, noting that immunity takes approximately three weeks to develop.
