Tamaulipas schools face disruptions due to theft and infrastructure issues

Approximately 2,500 to 3,000 students in Tamaulipas have been forced to attend classes online due to infrastructure failures, unfinished construction, and theft. Nora Hilda de los Reyes Vázquez, subsecretary of Basic Education, confirmed that at least six schools are currently operating remotely.

In Matamoros, two secondary schools remain online because construction by the Instituto Tamaulipeco de Infraestructura Física Educativa (ITIFE) is incomplete. A primary school in Reynosa and a facility in Tampico are also utilizing distance learning.

In Ciudad Victoria, the Juana de Asbaje y Ramírez Primary School is unable to host students following the theft of electrical wiring over a weekend. The theft has disabled air conditioning units, making classrooms untenable due to high temperatures. Additionally, the Juan B. Tijerina Primary School is facing issues with a transformer that was targeted in a theft attempt and subsequently leaked liquid, requiring safety evaluations by civil protection and environmental authorities.
