Tamaulipas tourism hits record high as Airbnb hosts face new tax

Tamaulipas reported a record-breaking summer 2026 vacation season, with over 5 million visitors, a 20.34% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The tourism sector generated more than 4.693 billion pesos in economic impact. The most visited destinations included Ciudad Madero, Tampico, Soto la Marina, Altamira, and Nuevo Laredo.

In a move to ensure fair competition with traditional hotels, approximately 2,400 Airbnb hosts in the state will now pay a 3% lodging tax. State Tourism Secretary Benjamín Hernández Rodríguez noted that negotiations with Airbnb were reactivated following legislative progress regarding rental restrictions. This tax implementation aims to create a “level playing field” and will provide the state with more precise data to improve tourism planning and visitor behavior analysis.
