Tamil film producers halt new releases from September 1
The Tamil film industry is facing a major crisis as the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and the Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association have announced a halt to all new film releases in theatres starting September 1.
The decision is a protest against unilateral terms set by the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Distributors Association. These bodies are demanding that producers provide a written commitment guaranteeing a mandatory eight-week theatrical window before any film can be released on OTT streaming platforms. Additionally, theatre owners have stated they will no longer provide advance payments for new films.
Producers argue these conditions were imposed without consultation and differ from practices in neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The producers' organizations have warned that if the dispute is not resolved, they will also halt all film shootings and post-production activities. They have called for the Tamil Nadu government to intervene to protect the livelihoods of thousands of workers in the industry.
